Sealants

Why Dental Sealants Are Necessary

Dental sealants are a preventive treatment designed to protect teeth from cavities. The chewing surfaces of molars and premolars have deep grooves and pits that can easily trap food particles and bacteria, making them highly susceptible to decay (Simonsen, 2011). Even with regular brushing and flossing, these areas can be difficult to clean thoroughly. Sealants act as a protective barrier, reducing the risk of cavities and the need for future restorative treatments like fillings or crowns.

The Process of Applying Dental Sealants

The application of dental sealants is quick, painless, and non-invasive. First, the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and dried. A special etching gel is then applied to the surface to create a rough texture, allowing the sealant to bond more effectively. After rinsing and drying the tooth again, the liquid sealant material is carefully painted onto the grooves of the tooth and hardened with a curing light. Once set, the sealant forms a durable shield that can last for several years, providing long-term cavity protection (Beauchamp et al., 2008).

Consequences of Not Getting Sealants

Without sealants, molars and premolars remain vulnerable to cavities, especially in children and teenagers who may struggle with thorough brushing techniques (Kühnisch et al., 2012). Once decay begins, it requires fillings or more extensive dental treatments to restore the tooth. Left untreated, cavities can deepen, leading to pain, infection, or even the need for root canals (Gooch et al., 2009). Dental sealants significantly reduce the risk of decay and help maintain long-term oral health by providing an additional layer of defense against harmful bacteria.
